Henrik Andersson, Global Creative Director at Fjallraven, and his team are dedicated to problem solving and creating quality products. Sustainable fashion is not easy. Andersson says: "We have to make compromises. Sometimes we have to say no when we want to say yes. We make mistakes, and we will make mistakes. But we try to learn from them; we strive to innovate and adapt. We are never satisfied, we are always looking for more. We never sit back and relax, because we believe that what we are doing now is important to keep going and to keep at it."They are going against the sped up world, and they don't want us to overexploitation and hoard as much as possible, they want us to buy quality! They produce according to nature's rules, so they can make products that last for generations. They set high standards for themselves and their suppliers, and hope to leave the earth in better shape than they found it.

Sustainable Design

Research, sketching, sampling, testing, repeating, modifying. The design process is not short. But Fjallraven does not want to compromise on quality and sustainability. They are not looking for quick fixes. In return, they make sure that their products are the best they can be, both made with durable and environmentally friendly materials, and with classic, genuinely useful features that you'll want to wear from adventure to adventure.

1. At first, they plan the size to minimise the amount of material that falls off when sewing.

2. Manufacturing efficiency, recyclability and style longevity are all the result of simple design. That's why unnecessary complexity is avoided.

3. Why use raw material when recycled material is available and offers the same quality? Tailoring and fit are designed to reduce waste. The type and quantity of material is a key consideration in the design.

4. Materials should be very durable and repairable for high-wear parts.

5. Few types of material are used in a product so that it can be easily recycled.

Sustainable Materials

Fenntartható alapanyagok A természet a legnagyobb inspiráció. Ahol csak lehetséges, organikus, megújuló és újrahasznosított anyagokat használnak. A nyomon követhető természetes anyagokat előnyben részesítik. És nyilván jobb egy olyan anyag, amely tartós, mint amit egy-két év után le kell cserélni. Az anyagokat többféle kategóriákba sorolják be. A legjobbak az újrahasznosított gyapjú, a bio kender és a Tencel (természetes, főként cellulóz alapú, kevés víz kell az előállításához). Még szintén jó anyagok: az újrahasznosított poliészter, a G-1000 Eco és a nyomon követhető gyapjú. Megfelelő anyag még a poliamid, a pamut, a fémgombok. Vannak olyanok viszont, amiket teljesen kizárnak: mint a PFC-k, PVC-k és az angóragyapjú, ezek nagyon nem fenntartható anyagok, és szennyezik a környezetet. Amikor állati eredetű anyagokat használnak, mint például pehely, gyapjú és bőr, nem hisznek a kompromisszumokban. Az állatok jóléte a legfőbb prioritás minden helyzetben!

Nature is the greatest inspiration. Organic, renewable and recycled materials are used wherever possible. Preference is given to traceable natural materials. And it's obviously better to have a material that lasts than one that needs to be replaced after a year or two.

Materials are classified into different categories. The best ones are recycled wool, organic hemp and Tencel (natural, mainly cellulose-based, requires little water to produce). Other good materials include recycled polyester, G-1000 Eco and traceable wool. Other suitable materials are polyamide, cotton and metal buttons. But there are some that are completely excluded: like PFCs, PVCs and angora wool, these are very unsustainable materials and pollute the environment. When they use materials of animal origin, such as down, wool and leather, they do not believe in compromise. Animal welfare is the top priority in all situations!

How are the chemicals treated?

In 2012, the company decided to replace the outer impregnation layer on the entire collection with a fluorocarbon-free one, as it is a greenhouse gas that accelerates global warming. Perfluorocarbons, also known as PFCs, are chemical compounds that are very difficult to break down once released into nature.

Sustainable Production

Ezért néhány terméket, például az Eco-Shell ruházatot, a Fjallraven Classic túraruháikat és az üzleti utazásokat klímakompenzálják, azaz különböző klímavédelmi szervezeteket támogatnak. Végső céljuk, hogy 2025-re teljesen szén-dioxid semlegessé váljanak.

A code of practice has been drawn up for the production process. They limit working hours and working conditions. Human rights, animal welfare, the environment, sustainable development and the fight against corruption are the most important factors. These are all included in this detailed code, which covers and thematises each point.Their long-term goal is to reduce their impact on the planet. They are on the right track. But they have not yet managed to eliminate their emissions completely. That's why some of their products, such as Eco-Shell clothing, the Fjallraven Classic hiking gear and business travels, are climate compensated, they support various climate protection organisations. Their ultimate goal is to become completely carbon neutral by 2025.
