You're looking forward to Christmas, aren't you, finally curling up by the fire with a big mug of marshmallow cocoa, your idyllic family and stockings hanging on the mantelpiece, with Jingle Bells in the background, all dressed up in your favourite reindeer knitted jumper? Well, it probably won't all come to fruition, but your best bet is a comfy sweater that radiates cosiness.
If you're keen to bring a little Christmas into your life, then snap up Szputnyik's carefully handpicked collection of the best ugly sweaters.
Ugly is fashion and not fashion at the same time. It deliberately defies any aesthetic or sense of beauty, in order to launch a counter-revolution of its own against the fashion industry. It speaks a little about tolerance and letting go of perfection. For once, to stop trying to conform to the norm and dare to break out of it, and to put our own childish selves a little bit first.
Reindeer, Grinch, bell, snowman, Christmas Darth Vader, string of lights, manor, stove, snowflake - all these designs are in this year's Sputnik range of ugly baubles. With so many patterns, colours and shapes to choose from, you're sure to find the right one for you, and you'll be able to enjoy a nice chowder over Christmas dinner.
Did you know that the fashion for ugly sweaters dates back to the 50s?
With the rise of the Christmas cult, more and more Christmas print garments started to be worn in 1950s America, and what is the most practical garment for cold winter days? A warm knitted sweater. Initially, however, these were more subdued patterns and were called the 'Jingle Bell Sweater'.
These fun, colourful sweaters then disappeared from the public eye for years, and were next seen on the star of the popular 80s The Cosby Show. But the real unstoppable success came with the sombre Mark Darcy of Bridget Jones' Diary, who graced the film with one of these wonderfully ugly sweaters.
From then on, it was one ugly sweater after another. In 2002, Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch held the world's first ugly sweater party in Vancouver, complete with a fundraiser. So successful was this event that in the following years, parties were held all over America, always raising money for those in need, with great success.
The fashion soon spread to the stars. From 2007 onwards, the media started to fill up with these sweaters, and stars started wearing the most astonishingly colourful horrors, outbidding each other.
There is even a world day, which falls on the third Friday of December every year. This year it will be 17 December.
